'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In the local section at Rossignol Wood on July 24th 1918 this NCO then a private, was one of a bombing section which did splendid work. When the NCO in command of the section was killed, this man took command, bombed down the enemy in face of heavy opposition, inflicting severe casualties on the enemy. He showed an utter contempt for danger, and handled his bombers with consummate skill. In the recent operations when a Lance Corporal in command of a Rifle Section, he did splendid work, showing throughout the finest qualities of leadership. At Haplincourt on September 2nd 1918, the advance was held up by an enemy machine gun post. This NCO collected a few men and by skilful use of ground, in the face of very severe fire and machine gun fire, outflanked the enemy machine gun, capturing the gun and six prisoners. By his initiative he saved many lives. He has at all times shown a splendid example of thorough and conscientious work.'
