'At Flers during the attack by this Battalion on the 16th September, and during the two following days this man did excellent work in keeping up communication with Brigade and Companies. From 10am on the 16th until he was seriously wounded on the morning of the 18th he went out repeatedly under very heavy fire to mend and lay new lines. The wires were frequently broken and were on all all occasions successfully restored by this Private under very heavy shellfire. During the whole action, he showed the utmost bravery and his devotion to duty was of great service to the Battalion.'
