Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on 8th October 1918, between Crevecouer and Wambaix. Before closing up to the first objective our assaulting troops came under severe machine gun fire from two enemy machine guns which were sweeping down the valley in such a way that our advance was held up. Receiving an order from his Company Commander, Corporal Sapsford ran up a
Spur on the left with his Lewis gun, calling upon two other Lewis gunners to follow him with their guns. Standing up under heavy fire he located the enemy gunners and immediately directed the fire of the three Lewis guns on to them, personally
firing his own gun, with such good effect that the Huns were routed or shot down as they ran away. This was an act of great gallantry and a splendid example of leadership which undoubtedly saved us much trouble and many casualties.'
