Military Medal 'Action: Grid Support Trench, north West of Flers, 1st October 1916. This man was a runner at Brigade Headquarters. During the middle of the action and during a heavy bombardment, it was necessary to send a very important message to the Battalion on the right flank at Factory Corner. The wires were cut, other runners had failed to get through, and it was necessary to send a message by a second
runner. This man was specially selected by the Brigadier to take the message, which he successfully delivered in a very short space of time, having to face very heavy barrage both going and coming. He has displayed great courage on many similar occasions during the past operations. He is deserving of special recognition.'
