'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At the assault on Belle Vue Ridge on October 12th, this man under heavy fire from machine guns and snipers, carried despatches from his Platoon Commander to the Company Headquarters on four successive occasions, his Platoon being just below an enemy strong point. Later on, under the same fire, he pluckily established connection between his Platoon and the 2nd Company of the 2nd Canterbury Batt.'
