'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field on the 26th day of March 1918 north east of Mailly Maillet. This NCO during the advance when the right of the attack was held up by a strong enemy position organised a small party of men. Though greatly outnumbered and under very heavy enemy machine gun fire, he led his men with great dash and captured the position, killing and wounding the garrison and capturing three machine-guns. He showed absolute disregard for personal safety, and by his devotion to duty and appreciation of the situation greatly inspired all his men.'
