'For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty during attack near Beaumont Hamel at 2pm on 30th March 1918. While his platoon was held up by heavy machine gun fire this NCO took a Lewis gun forward and although severely wounded in the head, successfully covered the advance of a bombing section and enabled them to successfully deal with the obstruction. He showed superb courage and set a splendid example of determination to his Comrades.'
