Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This NCO was in command of a Reserve Platoon on 3rd December during the attack on the Polderhoek Chateau when he was ordered to reinforce the front line which had been held up: he led his platoon forward with remarkable ability and coolness under very heavy shelling and machine gun fire. He carefully dispersed his Platoon in its new positions and although twice buried by enemy shells he continued to carry on, and by his personal example he inspired confidence in his Platoon. His good leadership and gallant behaviour undoubtedly saved many casualties, and his utter disregard for his personal safety was an excellent example to all with whom he came into contact.'
