Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the morning of 26th August 1918, Private Richards was assisting to guide up Units of the 3rd New Zealand (Rifle) Brigade to their assembly position at Favrieul. The enemy were shelling heavily and the units repeatedly lost touch in the dark. This man was frequently up and down the column connecting Units and pointing out the way. His gallantry and total
disregard for his personal safety were a splendid example to all.'
