Proceeded overseas to France, 7 September 1917; marched out to NZ Division, 7 October 1917; posted to 3rd Battery, in the field, 10 October 1917. Appointed fitter, 12 November 1917. Admitted to 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, 26 November 1917 (laryngitis), and transferred to Ambulance Train No 16; admittted to 4th General Hospital, Camiers; transferred to England, 2 December 1917, and admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames; transferred to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 11 March 1918; discharged on furlough, 17 May 1918, to report to Discharge Depot, Torquay, 31 May 1918.
