Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field at Briastre on 12th October 1918. This NCO was in charge of a Lewis gun team at Belle Vue, and by his consummate coolness and disregard of danger, combined with cheerfulness, set a
magnificent example to his men. For a time his team was in a critical position, the Company left flank being in the air, the left Company being held up by machine gun fire, but he safely held his flank until the whole line was established. When this machine gun was being dealt with four of the crew, endeavouring to get back to their own lines, were effectively dealt with by this man personally, thus preventing the enemy from gaining knowledge as to our dispositions.'
