Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. After the order to retire had been given he carried his officer, who had been seriously wounded, under extremely heavy high-explosive shell and machine gun fire from an exposed place to a place of safety. His courage and devotion to duty were always most praiseworthy.'
