Military Medal 'On the 30th November 1917 near Ypres this soldier displayed the very greatest courage and devotion to duty. He was in charge of an S.O.S. guard outside a pillbox in support line, whose duty it was to watch for and repeat signals from the front. Information had been received that an attack by the enemy was expected, and at 4.30am an intense and concentrated bombardment opened on the support line lasting 2 hours. Private Purcell remained at his post observing throughout the
bombardment. Four direct hits were made on the pillbox where he stood and a fifth shell bursting just alongside, threw him bodily down the steps of the pillbox. Nevertheless he insisted on returning to his post and carrying on his duty. Later, on
5th December this man showed great skill and courage in charge of a difficult bombing post, and while so acting was severely wounded. His great courage and extreme devotion to duty were a magnificent example to his fellows.'
