'For great gallantry and devotion to duty. Near Gravenstafel on the 4th October, 1917, he acted as runner maintaining liaison with the Battalion on the left. He carried numerous messages to and from his own Battalion, passing through heavy shell fire. He worked unceasingly throughout the whole of the day displaying the utmost gallantry and devotion to duty, and invariably delivered his messages. His work was of the utmost value to his own unit and the Battalion on its flank.'
