Embarked Wellington, 23 September 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 18 November 1916, and marched into Sling Camp, and reverted to Temporary Sergeant.

Confirmed in rank of Sergeant on passing School of Instruction, 27 December 1916.

Proceeded overseas to France, 7 January 1917; joined 2nd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 5 February 1917, and posted to D Company.

Detached to Fascines Making Party, 30 April 1917; rejoined unit from detachment, 23 May 1917.

Admitted to 3rd NZ Field Ambulance, 6 August 1917 (debility), and transferred same day to No 2 Australian Casualty Clearing Station;to No 1 Australian General Hospital, Rouen, 7 August 1917; discharged to Base Depot, Etaples, 11 August 1917; rejoined unit, in the field, 7 September 1917.
