Confirmed in rank of Sergeant on passing School of Instruction, 27 December 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 7 January 1917; joined 2nd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 5 February 1917, and posted to D Company. Detached to Fascines Making Party, 30 April 1917; rejoined unit from detachment, 23 May 1917. Admitted to 3rd NZ Field Ambulance, 6 August 1917 (debility), and transferred same day to No 2 Australian Casualty Clearing Station;to No 1 Australian General Hospital, Rouen, 7 August 1917; discharged to Base Depot, Etaples, 11 August 1917; rejoined unit, in the field, 7 September 1917.
