'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Gravenstafel on 4 October 1917, when performing the Duties as a Brigade "Runner", he carried dispatches through very heavy barrages of shell and machine gun fire between the Battalion Headquarters in the line and Brigade forward relay Posts, and greatly assisted to maintain important communications at an important period of the battle. His total disregard of danger and his cheerfulness in carrying out his missions set a fine example of devotion to Duty.'
