'For gallantry and devotion to duty on June 5 1915. When he held the rank of Corporal was one of a party to made a raid from "Quinn?s Post". He showed great bravery both in the attack and counter attack. He defended one of the wounded while in a dangerous position. He afterwards took several messages from the captured trench to the main trench. On May 8th 1915 he took part in the attack at Cape Helles and in the evening when none of the QMs could be found he was sent back to bring up rations for the Battalion. This was very difficult and dangerous performance which he carried out well. He served with the Batt. from the day of Mobilization until wounded on the 8th August. During this advance he was in charge of a Platoon and again showed coolness and bravery until he was wounded at Rhododendron Ridge. He has always shown the utmost devotion to duty and has twice before been recommended by this Battalion for distinction. He is a present serving with this Battalion as Quartermaster Sergeant.'
