Military Medal 'Operations in front of Beaumont Hamel. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In the afternoon of 3rd April 1918, the enemy put down a very heavy bombardment on the Front and support lines. The Post of which Private Bird was in
charge was blown up, three of the garrison being buried by the debris, while he himself was blown out of the trench into No Man's Land. Although badly shaken, he at once rushed back to his post, and, regardless of his personal safety, commenced to dig out his comrades whose lives he undoubtedly saved. His coolness and devotion to duty, despite persistent enemy sniping at this exposed point, and under heavy shell fire, were an example and inspiration to all, while, by his courage and initiative, he undoubtedly saved valuable lives.'
