Military Medal 'East of Ypres on the 4th October 1917 this soldier displayed throughout the operation the greatest courage and the utmost devotion to duty. He was foremost in every part of the fight, assisting in the capture of the first concrete emplacement where his company were held up, and later assisting in the capture of a second position with two machine guns. He worked ceaselessly in the consolidation of the position and when that was effected he volunteered as ration carrier and later as assistant stretcher bearer. His extraordinary energy, great courage, and devotion to duty were a magnificent example to his comrades.'
