War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 23 September 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 18 November 1916, and marched into Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 14 December 1916; joined 4th Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 17 January 1917, and posted to B Company. Admitted to No 2 NZ Field Ambulance, 8 March 1917 (scabies); transferred to Northumbrian Casualty Clearing Station, 11 March 1917; rejoined unit, 14 March 1917. Reported wounded and missing, 12 October 1917. Statement, 21060 Rifleman H.C. MacDonald, 4th Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade: 'I last saw Rfm. Pearce in a shell hole 200 or 300 yds in advance of the line we consolidated. He was wounded & was rater badly burned by a smoke bomb he was carrying. We were driven in front of that position by the enemy but I did not see Pearce again. He was alive and quite strong when we left him & may have been taken prisoner.'
