'For gallantry and initiative. During the attack of the New Zealand Division east of St Julien on October 4th 1917, this NCO organised teams to man two captured machine guns, which were used in repelling counter attacks. These guns materially strengthened the line and much praise in due to L/Cpl Paynter for his initiative and daring.'
