Bronze Medal (Italy) 'For gallantry and devotion to duty during operations on the Somme, September 17th 1916. Although he had been carrying patients for 18 hours without rest through a heavy barrage, and had several of his comrades killed and wounded, he gallantly continued carrying, and guided a party through a heavy barrage in order to bring in wounded men who were lying exposed to the enemy's artillery fire in Flers. In this he was successful, thus showing the other stretcher bearers a splendid example of courage and self sacrifice.'
