'Period: 22nd September 1917 to 24th February 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer has served with his Battalion since August 1915. During this time he has displayed the greatest gallantry and devotion to duty and it was due to his bravery and perseverance that the Battalion had its supplies brought up with unfailing regularity. He was Transport Officer at Belle Vue Spur, and on the evening of the 12th October, after the heavy day's fighting, he brought the rations through the enemy barrage right up to the Battalion Headquarters. On the way he lost several horses and men, but he had the loads transferred and pushed on arriving in and exhausted condition. The mud was awful, and it was a severe test of endurance to face this and the heavy barrage put down. At Polderhoek on December 2nd he again displayed great bravery and resource in bringing rations right through to the men in the line. Right throughout he has shown a great example to his men and has rendered splendid service to his Battalion.'
