Military Medal 'Throughout the operations at Avesnes on 24th August and at Bapaume on 25th August, this NCO as leader of a Rifle Section, displayed great coolness and daring when approaching the Railway Avesnes. When bombed by the enemy from a post on his flank, he coolly turned and shot the man dead. In front of Avesnes, where his section held the most forward post, he kept a continuous watch all night. During the day his section was subjected to heavy machine gun fire but he kept his men well in hand and ably directed their fire. Considerable trouble was caused by an enemy sniper who was firing from a dump of trees but after watching for over an hour and a half, he finally located and shot him.'
