'Action: Flers 15th, 16th and 17th September 1916. This man acted as a battalion runner on the 15th and 16th September, and succeeding days. He repeatedly carried messages and orders to companies during the progress of an attack. He displayed the utmost contempt of danger and the greatest possible devotion to duty, passing and repassing through the enemy's barrage, and though more than once blown over by the explosions of shells close to him, he pluckily stuck to his duty throughout.'
