'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty the attack on Bancourt on the 31st August and 1st September. After his platoon commander had been wounded he took charge of the platoon and set a splendid example of coolness and courage under fire. When it appeared apparent that the enemy had broken through on the left flank he gallantly led his platoon across a bullet swept zone and assisted it forming a defensive flank. He has consistently done good work and showed great coolness under fire.'
