Military Medal 'In the operations against Belle Vue Spur near Passchendaele on the 12th October. Sapper Nicolas was in the forward party of the 2nd New Zealand Infantry Brigade. His Officer and every other man of the Signal Section in the party was hit and put out of action. Sapper Nicolas continued sending messages back by Lucas Lamp and tried to get communications forward to the front line until ordered to desist by the Commanding Officer to whom he then attached himself. On being ordered to return to Brigade Headquarters he collected all the stores he could find, a good load for one man under normal conditions, and took them with him. During the whole of the above time he was on a slope open to the enemy, swept by machine gun fire and under shellfire.'
