'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the operations from 24th August to the 1st September he acted as Adjutant of the Battalion. At Grevillers on 24th August when the Commanding Officer was wounded, he took command until a senior officer reached Headquarters later in the day. Near Bancourt on 30th August he made a valuable reconnaissance under heavy shell fire. He worked indefatigably often under heavy fire and at all times showed the greatest courage and resource, and never spared himself. Much of the success of the operations was due to his invaluable work.'
