Military Medal This NCO was in charge of the regimental stretcher bearers stationed outside our front line parapet at the mouth of the tunnel through which the raiding party from the 2nd Wellington Regiment returned on the night of 2/3rd July. Though the trench was being heavily shelled by the enemy, Sergeant Nicholas continued at his post and dressed and sent forward over 20 wounded men. He displayed courage and resource and worked under fire for over an hour and a half. His good work enabled all the wounded men to be got quickly away as soon as they got through the parapet. |
