Embarked Wellington, 15 November 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, marched in to Sling Camp and taken on strength Canterbury Infantry Regiment, New Zealand Reserve Group, 29 January 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 1 March 1917; joined 2nd Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, in the field, and posted to 12th (Nelson) Company, 25 May 1917. Reported missing, believed killed in action, 12 October 1917. Court of Enquiry, 11 November 1917. 'On the morning of 12 October Private Newlove was with my section up until we reached about 50 yards from our jumping off trench. At this spot we met heavy machine gun fire. I missed Newlove at this spot. I saw no more of him.'
