Proceeded overseas to France, 6 July 1917; joined 2nd Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, in the field and posted to 12th (Nelson) Company, 25 July 1917.

Killed in action, Belgium, 12 October 1917.

Buried on Bellevue Spur (D 9 d88), Passchendaele, by the Reverend John Arthur Lush, New Zealand Army Chaplains Department, attached to 2nd Battalion, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 13 October 1917; grave subsequently lost.
