Military Medal 'British Front West and East of Bapaume 25th August to 7th September 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During these operations Sergeant Berney acted as Signalling Sergeant, and when the Signalling Officer was wounded carried on his duties. He showed a fine example to his men, and established and maintained telephonic and visual communication under particularly difficult and trying circumstances. His courage and determination never wavered and he worked day and night to keep the communications going.'
