Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 24th July 1918, in the Rossignol Wood Sector, when our line was being advanced, Lance Corporal Murray was in charge of the maintenance of all the forward Company Lines, which were subjected to heavy bombardment by the enemy. He was on duty repairing lines under heavy shell for 12 hours. The area over which he worked was right in the enemy barrage line and was continually bombarded by heavy shells, in spite of which this NCO on being told that the wire was broken, went out immediately at night and effected the necessary repairs. He displayed great devotion to duty and absolute disregard of personal danger in keeping intact the forward system of
communication at a time when an enemy counter attack was hourly expected. On the evening of 25th July he did similar good work regardless of danger during the enemy bombardment proceeding the counter-attack, and thus enabled Battalion
Headquarters to keep continuously in touch with the situation forward.'
