'He went forward with the infantry as Forward Observation Officer, and sent back valuable information regarding the progress of the attack. He also captured fifteen prisoners. Subsequently, when his battery was subjected to an intense bombardment, his example of courage and coolness had a most encouraging effect on his men.'
