Military Medal 'Operations on Welsh and Bon Avis Ridges 28th September to 1st October 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and untiring energy during the operations. This man was the first to volunteer to carry in wounded and reconnoitre the enemy position. When one of the stretcher bearers became a casualty, he assisted to bring in wounded at night and volunteered to take two serious cases to the regimental aid post, 2000 yards back over difficult ground, under heavy shell and machine gun fire. Though without sleep for 48 hours, he volunteered to form part of a fighting patrol to disperse a threatened enemy attack. Later, when a ration party was dispersed by enemy machine gun fire, he went out under machine-gun fire, collected the party and by skilful handling, enabled the party to reach the front line without casualties. His example was of great assistance to the success of the operations.'
