Bar to Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Near Hebuterne, on 22nd May 1918, Sergt Methven and one other rank in broad daylight rushed an enemy sentry post and brought in two prisoners. Again on 24th May with a patrol of 20 other ranks he crossed No Mans Land in daylight until he came in contact with a post 500 yards from our line occupied by two of the enemy, one of whom was shot and the other taken prisoner. The enemy in a trench 30 yards away had received the alarm, and 20 strong rushed the patrol. Sergt Methven ordered the patrol to withdraw, and seeing that it was impossible to get his prisoner away, shot him. He
then threw two bombs among the advancing enemy and also emptied his revolver into them at short, range inflicting numerous casualties.'

He led his section on until held up by an enemy strong point 250 yards in front of the consolidated line. He remained there with only two men, covering the consolidation and harassing the enemy strong point. He showed great initiative and determination, and was mainly responsible for that part of the line being consolidated.'
