Military Medal 'Gallantry and devotion to duty at St Yves Hill, north of Ploegsteert Road, on 23rd March 1917. At 4am 23rd March the enemy opened a heavy bombardment on our front and support lines on St Yves Hill. Corporal McQuillan, in spite of Minewerfer bombs and shrapnel bursting all round him, kept his stokes gun in action for 45 minutes. The gun fired over one hundred (100) rounds into "No Man's Land" on the ground over which the enemy attempted to raid and this materially helped in their defeat. This NCO has shown great courage and fine power of leadership.'
