Admitted to Stationary Hospital, Lemnos, 6 August 1915 (diarrhoea); transferred to England, 8 September 1915.

Medical report: 'Disability: general breakdown & tremor (Alcoholic). He landed May 8/16 [sic; should be 1915] and left with General debility on date above [8 August 1915] mentioned caused by chronic dysentery. He was 14 years in the Royal Naval [sic] & says he drank very little, but since joining the Expeditionary Force he has become much worse, and has drunk fairlt heavily since he came out of hospital. He says he gets very depressed and must drink to drown his sorrows and depression which has developed since his stay on Gallipoli.'

Commenced return to New Zealand on board HT 'Willochra', 12 August 1916; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of illness contracted on Active Service), 31 October 1916.

Medical Board, Dunedin, 10 October 1915, concluded: 'General breakdown, following dysentery aggravated by alcohol; consequent disability: nervous debility; progress: still very shakey [sic] no doubt chiefly due to drink.'
