Proceeded overseas to France, 9 December 1916;joined 2nd Bn, Canterbury Infantry Bn, in the field, 7 January 1917.

Wounded in action, 26 May 1917 (gun shot wound, back), and admitted to 53rd Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 2nd Australian General Hospital, Wimereux, 27 May 1917; transferred to England, 29 May 1917, and admitted same day to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames; to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 13 June 1917; to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 13 April 1918.

Marched in to Reserve Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, Sling Camp, 6 June 1918.

Proceeded overseas to France, 10 October 1918; rejoined Bn, in the field, 2 November 1918.
