Proceeded overseas to France, 26 September 1916; joined 1st Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, in the field, 14 October 1916. Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 29 April 1917; discharged to duty, 14 May 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 15 May 1917. On leave to United Kingdom, 20 September 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, from leave, 11 October 1917.
