War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 25 September 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 21 November 1916, and marched in to Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 7 January 1917; joined 1st Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, 5 February 1917, and posted to B Company. On leave to United Kingdom, 14 January 1918; rejoined Bn from leave, 1 February 1918. Wounded in action, 5 April 1918 (gun shot wound, buttock and thigh), and admitted to No 2 NZ field Ambulance, and transferred to 56th Casualty Clearing Station; to No 1 Canadian General Hospital, 8 April 1918; to England, 17 April 1918, and admitted same day to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 17 June 1918; discharged to NZ Convalescent Depot, Codford, 21 September 1918. Commenced return to New Zealand from Plymouth on board HMNZT 'Tainui', 18 March 1919; discharged, 28 May 1919.
