War service: Egypt, Gallipoli Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 12 April 1915. Transferred by HS 'Clacton' to Mudros, 24 August 1915; to England, and admitted to War Hospital, Rubery, Birmingham, 16 September 1915. Medical report, Monte Video Camp, Weymouth, 16 November 1915: 'On 21st Aug. at Anzac he had an accident - severely strained to left knee. When charging he fell into a trench. He was unable to move & was carried to beach & was transported to transport to England & was admitted to Rubery Hill Hospital, Birmingham. Before coming to England he was a patient at Lemnos. A diagnosis of derangement of knee joint was made in Birmingham. His knee was operated upon at Egyptian Army Hospital Cairo in Feb. & was an in-patient for two weeks, where he had acute synovitis & the fluid was extracted.' Commenced return to New Zealand on board SS 'Rotorua', 16 December 1915; discharged (medically unfit for Active Service, although fit for employment in civil life), 5 March 1916.
