'British Front north of Hebuterne: July 12th 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During a minor enterprise in the Rossignol Wood sector on 12th July 1918, this NCO working in conjunction with another patrol, led his patrol of three men down a sap leading towards the enemy, under cover of Stokes Mortar fire, until he reached a position from which to raid an enemy strong point. From here he led his patrol overland, scrambled over the enemy wire, entered the strong point, and brought back a useful prisoner under hostile machine gun fire. The enterprise was carried out with dash and decision.'
