Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry. On the night of 23rd July 1918 during operations near Hebuterne the enemy were shelling our positions very heavily, the shells falling especially along the communication trench along which ran the wire connecting Company Headquarters with Battalion Headquarters. Three times during the night of the 23rd the wire was broken by shell fire. L/Corpl McCrostie went down the trench each time and successfully mended the wire. On one occasion on his return to Company Headquarters he found that the wire was again broken and without a moments hesitation went back down the wire again successfully mending this break. It is due to L/C McCostie's untiring efforts and utter disregard of personal danger that communications was kept between Company Headquarters and Battalion Headquarters during a very critical time.'
