'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When all the officers of the three attacking companies had become casualties he led his platoon forward under heavy machine gun fire to strengthen the centre of the line. He established a defensive line in the face of great difficulties, and, though wounded, remained with his men until he had put the position in a sound state of defence.'
