Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Gouzeaucourt from 8th to 3th September 1918. During the night 11th/12th September L/Cpl Mathias, who was in charge of the Brigade Central Visual Station, was heavily shelled with high explosive and gas. Although in a very exposed position he remained at his post and established communication with battalions. He was suffering from the effects of gas but refused to leave his post until relieved, and was then evacuated to hospital. The maintaining of his station was of the greatest importance, as, owing to the heavy shell fire telephone communication was impossible.'
