Military Medal 'Operations: On British Front, opposite Beaumont Hamel, 26th March 1918 and subsequent days. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At 8.30am on 2nd April 1918, Corporal Marshall and a comrade went out on patrol in an endeavour to ascertain the enemy's exact position. He worked up several of the old trenches, and at last discovered an enemy sniping post. Pushing further forward, he suddenly discovered a block in the trench, guarded by a German sentry, whom he immediately killed. He was out in No Man's Land for over four hours, and returned with valuable information concerning the enemy's disposition.'
