War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 12 June 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 26 August 1917, and marched in to Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 27 September 1917; joined 1st Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, 9 October 1917, and posted to 4th Company. Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 21 October 1917; transferred to No 7 Canadian Stationary Hospital, Etaples, 22 October 1917 (trench feet); transferred to England, 6 November 1917, and admitted same day to Lewisham Military Hospital, London SE; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 27 December 1917. Medical report, 27 December 1917: 'Trench feet. After a spell of several days in very wet trenches without a change of boots or socks, he reported sick (in Ypres sector) & was sent to 7 Can. Sta. Hosp.where his condition was noted to be "Both feet slightly swollen & discoloured, especially on soles. Painful. Violent cough, very hoarse, no expectoration; slight fever."' Discharged to NZ Command Depot, 19 January 1918, and given leave until 4 February 1918. Marched in to 3rd Reserve Bn, Sling Camp, 25 March 1918.
