War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Wellington, 1 April 1916; disembarked Suez, 2 May 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 20 May 1916; joined 2nd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 12 July 1916, and posted to D Company. Found guilty, 27 October 1916, of when on Active Service, while on duty as Signaller being outside the Signal Office: deprived of 7 days' pay. Appointed Lance Corporal while doing duty with Regimental Medical Officer, 27 December 1916. Relinquished appointment of Lance corporal, 30 July 1917. On leave to United Kingdom, 30 July 1917; admitted to Venereal Hospital, Codford, while on leave, 10 August 1917; discharged and attached to VD Section, Codford, 15 September 917; rejoined unit, in the field, 30 September 1917.
