Medals

Mentioned in Despatches

'Action Flers Trench and Flers Support Trench and Goose Alley, West of Flers, 20th and 21st September, and Grid Trenches, 1st October 1916. This Officer has rendered conspicuous service during these operations by the manner in which he has commanded his machine gun section. His work was especially good when assisting the 2nd Canterbury Batt. to repel a German counter attack up Goose Alley and Flers Support Trench on the afternoon of the 21st September when, in addition to doing his own duty very well, he took part in a bayonet charge across the open which routed the German counter attack.'

Military Cross

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He showed great skill in successfully bringing into action four captured enemy machine guns, together with his own four guns. Later, he displayed great gallantry in taking his section through the enemy's barrage and bringing them into action. The following day, although badly bruised and completely buried by the enemy's shell fire, he displayed complete contempt for danger, placing his guns in a forward position. He had been severely wounded early in the operations, and his example has at all times had a splendid effect upon the spirits of his men.'
